Bayern Shocked in Belarus, Barca, Chelsea and United Pick up Wins

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich lost their 100 per cent win record to lowly Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov  as the UEFA Champions League resumed Tuesday night.

The Bavarians were comfortably swept aside 3-1 by the 8-time Belarusian premier league champions who are now at the summit of Group F after picking back-to-back 3-1 wins, the previous one being against French side Lille.

BATE took the lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of Alexander Pavlov who slotted home after collecting a pass from Aleksandr Volodko. They held on to the 1-0 scoreline heading into the interval.  Vitali Rodionov doubled the host’s lead in the 78th minute after a fine interchange with Edgar Olekhnovich to put BATE on the path of a famous win.

Bayern’s Franck Ribery pulled one back in the first minute of added time but substitute Renan Bressan restored the two-goal advantage in the 95th minute to give BATE the win that moved them top of Group F with 6 points.

Brazilian forward Jonas Gonçalves Oliveira scored a goal either side of the interval to give Valencia a 2-0 win over Lille who are yet to register points in this year’s competition.

In Group G, Cesc Fabregas scored his third goal in the last two matches to lead Barcelona to a comfortable 2-0 win over Portuguese side Benfica. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for the Blaugrana in the 6th minute and Fabregas made sure of the points in the 56th minute in a match that marred by the sight of club captain Carles Puyol break his arm.

Celtic ended their 26-year wait for an away win in the Champions league with a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Spartak Moscow in Russia. Greek forward Georgis Samaras scored a late winner in the 90th minute to give the Bhoys the win. Gary Hooper had put Celtic ahead in the 12th minute only for Spartak’s Emmanuel Emenike to score two goals in a space of 7 minute to give Spartak a 2-1 lead heading into half time.

A Dmitriy Kombarov own goal in the 71st minute restored parity only for Samaras to grab the winner at the death.

In Group E, a Juan Mata double and a goal each from David Luiz and Ramires gave Chelsea a routine 4-0 win over Danish Champions FC Nordsjælland. Shakthar Donetsk grabbed a point at Juventus after Alex Teixeira gave them a 23rd minute lead only for Leonardo Bonucci to draw level for the hosts. The match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Robin Van Persie found the back of the net twice as Manchester United survived a scare in Romania against hosts CFR Cluj. Pantelis Kapetanos gave the hometeam the lead in the 14th minute but Van Persie’s double in the 29th and 49th minute secured the three points for Alex Fergusson’s side. In the other group encounter, Ruben Michael and Alan were both on target for Sporting Braga in their 2-0 win over Galatasaray.
