Chelsea Trip for Kenya’s Top Three Copa Players

The top three Kenyan players in this year’s COPA Coca-Cola U-17 youth football tourney will get a chance to train with Chelsea Football Club.

The top goalkeeper, the topscorer and the best infield player in the national finals which will be staged in Kisumu’s Jomo Kenyatta grounds from August 21st-28th will all get a lifetime chance to travel to the London club and be part of a two-week international camp which will also see them meet members of the first team.

The announcement was made Wednesday August 18 during the draw for the finals. Eleven teams from across the country will compete for the finals and have been drawn in three pools. Pool A will be the group of death as it contains teams like hosts and defending champions Ambira High from Nyanza, Nairobi’s tricky JMJ Academy, Chavakali High from Western and the impressive Taqwa Secondary from Eastern province.

Group B will see Coast Province’s Mombasa United, Ainul Qamar from North Eastern, Mombwo High from Rift Valley and Gituru High from Central province all fighting to advance to the finals, while the third pool will have Makindu United, Lasalle Youth and Friends Bwake. The top eight ranked teams from the three pools will qualify for the quarterfinals and get closer to winning the over 1 million shillings worth in prizes.

Besides meeting members of Chelsea’s first team, the three top players (who will be chosen by a panel of talent scouts at the tourney) will also have access to the club’s training facilities, tour the stadium and other tourist areas in London and conclude by watching an EPL match at Stamford Bridge in September.

The winners of the tournament will be awarded with 600,000 shillings, 300,000 for the runners-up while the third placed team will get 100,000 shillings. There will also be a major treat for the fans during the week-long event with fanfest events like ball juggling, spin the wheel, dancing and coke drinking competitions, football trivia, musical chairs among others all lined up. The fans will also stand a chance to win prizes including vuvuzelas, t-shirts, caps, footballs, string bags, phones and other merchandize.

Famous artists, dance groups, acrobats and MC’s will be present to hype up the crowd during the event. The COPA Coca-Cola tournament kicked off in March 4th 2011 and has seen over 500 teams participate in the tournament.
