The draw for the third round of the English Football League
Cup was released with five of the fixtures pitting Premier League teams against
each other.
Arsenal will host Southampton at the Emirates, the Saints
having beaten Championship side Millwall in 2-0 in their second round tie. Last
year’s beaten finalists, Hull City will travel to the Hawthorns to take on West
Brom while Crystal Palace will play Newcastle at Selhurst Park.
Other all-Premier League team fixtures will see Sunderland
play host to Stoke City as Everton travel to Wales for their clash against
Swansea City.
Current holders, Manchester City will start their title
defence against Sheffield Wednesday at the Eitihad Stadium. Sheffield conquered
Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor. Record champions Liverpool will host championship
side Middlesbrough at Anfield, the two club’s last meeting dating back to over
five years ago. Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea were drawn to play Bolton Wanderers at
Stamford bridge while Tottenham will welcome Nottingham Forest at the White
Hart Lane.
Milton Keynes Dons who provided the one of the biggest
upsets in League Cup history by hammering Manchester United 4-0 will hope for
more of the same when they play fellow League One side Bradford City at Stadium
MK. Leyton Orient will play Sheffield United, Cardiff host Bournemouth, Derby
County host Reading as Burton Albion play Brighton & Hove Albion at the
Pirelli Stadium.
Shrewsbury Town and Fulham will host Norwich City and
Doncaster Rovers respectively. The third round ties will be played during the
week commencing 22 September 2014.
