Gabon will host the 31st edition of Africa Cup of
Nations in 2017 after beating off competition from fellow West Africans Ghana
and North Africans Algeria.
Les Panthers who co-hosted the 2012 edition alongside
Equatorial Guinea received the nod to host the tournament for the second time
in their history from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee,
who voted in Cairo, Egypt.
Algeria, hosts in 1990, were bookmakers favorites to get the
rights with Ghana, bidding for a fifth time, also favored ahead of Gabon.
Meanwhile the draw for the qualifiers for the 2017
tournament was also conducted. Reigning Champions Cote d’Ivoire were drawn in a
tricky Group I which also has the hosts Gabon, 1970 AFCON winners Sudan and underdogs
Sierra Leone.
Group G looked the tough on paper with record champions
Egypt drawn alongside 2013 winners Nigeria, with Tanzania and Chad completing
the Group.
