Harambee Stars Shift Attention to Congo after Rwanda Assignment

Kenya national team Harambee Stars are expected to return in the country today, June 8, after a fairly strong show away in Rwanda.

Stars traveled to Kigali on Friday last week and participated in a four-nation tournament to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Bobby Williamson’s side were held to a barren draw against hosts Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in their first clash.

They however turned on the style on Sunday, beating neighbours South Sudan 2-0. Captain, Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama netted the opener from the spot in the first half, before Gor Mahia hitman Michael Olunga added the second late on in the match. 

It was Olunga’s senior and he marked it with a goal, his fourth strike in Kenyan colours having bagged a hat-trick in last month’s Olympics Qualifier clash against Botswana. 

Stars , who are now full-strength after the end of the Kenya Premier League mid-season will now focus their attention in the first leg AFCON qualifier clash away to Congo Brazzaville set for Owande City this Sunday.

Gor Mahia Finish First Half of KPL Season Unbeaten

Reigning Kenya Premier League Champions, Gor Mahia, beat Tusker 1-0 in a tense clash at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, to finish the half-season unbeaten.

Rwandan forward, Meddie Kagere had the capacity crowd at the Stadium celebrating after he found the winning goal in the 77th minute.

Gor Mahia began the match in a cagey manner and could have fallen behind as early as the third minute when Jesse Were was let through but Musa Mohamed recovered just in time to make a timely interception before the forward pulled the trigger.

The nervy moment awakened the two-time KPL champions and Michael Olunga thought he had scored against his former employers but Tusker keeper Martin Musalia pulled off a double save. Olunga was proving a constant threat keeping Brewers center-halves Donald Mosoti and Loyd Wahome awake all the time.

However, neither of the two KPL giants managed to take the lead with the game leveled 0-0 at the break. Franck Nuttal’s side began the second half with more intent and decided to attack the wings. Karim Nizigiyimana floated in crosses into the Tusker box but Kagere and Olunga failed to connect.

Kogalo would find the breakthrough in the 77th minute with Kagere netting, his 9th strike of the season. The 14-time champions managed the rest of the match to claim the three points which all but ended Tusker’s slim title hopes.

With Sofapaka losing 1-0 in a dramatic clash with AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia closed the half-season with a 12-point lead.

In a match played earlier at the same stadium, substitute Allan Katerega scored an 81st winner for Ushuru FC in a 1-0 win over hosts Western Stima. The dull game only sprung to life after Katerega entered the scene in place of Mohamed Hassan. He headed home a Moses Odhiambo cross to give Ken Kenyatta’s side the full points which took them 5th on the log.

Ethiopia’s Ayalew Denies Kenya Podium Finish in Rome

Kenya’s Virginia Nyambura failed to repeat her Doha heroics in Thursday night’s Rome Diamond League as she was beaten by compatriot Hyvin Kiyeng in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Nyambura who went against the script to win in Doha despite being drafted as a pacesetter looked comfortable during the race but was beaten to the finish line by Kiyeng who clocked a personal best 9:15.08 on her way to victory. Nyambura’s 9:15.75 saw her make a further improvement on her personal best.

Ethiopia’s Ayalew Hiwot got in between Nyambura and fourth-placed Lidya Chepkurui to deny Kenya a podium finish.

In the men’s 5000m, Kenya’s Paul Tanui finished second in 12:28.69 behind 17-year-old Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, whose 12:58.39 was the fastest time this year.

World 800m champion Mohammed Aman won the two-lap race in a world leading 1:43.56 ahead of Nijel Amos in second with Kenya’s Job Kinyor third.

Dutch Hassan Sifan produced a strong kick down the home stretch to win the women’s 1500m. American Jennifer Simpson was second, Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia third while Kenya’s Viola Kibiwott finished in a disappointing 5th. 

American Justin Gatlin hit another stride on his return from serving two doping bans by setting a new meet record at the IAAF Diamond League Rome Golden Gala Thursday night. 

The 33-year-old turned on his fastest mode yet bolting to the finish line in the men’s 100m in 9.72 seconds, a new meeting record that shaved 0.04 seconds off Usain Bolt’s 9.76 set in 2012. 

Gatlin zoomed off the blocks in searing pace and raced clear of the field to post what is the 7th fastest time in history to give Jamaican World Champion Bolt another nightmare. 

Although he reiterated that he’s not thinking of a much-awaited clash with Bolt at the World Championships in Beijing in August, the manner in which he is performing gives indications of a man who wants to conquer all.

Harambee Stars Keeper Origi Hails Johanna’s Goalazo against Ulinzi

He may be thousands of miles away from home but Kenya’s number one goalkeeper Arnold Origi is a man who keeps tabs with what’s happening in his homeland.

The 31-year-old keeper at Norwegian club, Lillestrom, was this week following closely his former KPL side Mathare United who traveled to Nakuru for their match against Ulinzi Stars.

Although the Soldiers won the match thanks to two first half goals from Stephen Ocholla and Kevin Amwayi, it was the consolation goal that Johanna Eric scored for the Slum Boys that delighted Origi.

Trailing 2-0 after half time, Johanna drilled in an unstoppable right footed strike from an impossible angle on the left channel on the pitch leaving Ulinzi keeper James Saruni clutching at thin air.

“Just seen Eric Johanna's goal for Mathare United against Ulinzi. No keeper in the world would have kept that out,” said Origi after watching the goal.

It was Johanna’s fourth goal of the season and the best of the lot which will for sure be a goal of the season contender.

Origi spent close to 7 years at Mathare United before signing for Tusker in 2006. He went to Norway a year later and has been playing in the Scandinavian country for nearly 8 years now.

AFC Leopards Officials Playing Russian Roulette

There seems to be no end in sight for troubled AFC Leopards who have been dominating local headlines for all the wrong the reasons.

Just a day after the club’s Chairman Allan Kasavuli and treasurer Esther Luvembe resigned from their positions and a 12-man interim committee appointed to take over the running of the club, Leopards’ Deputy Secretary General, Asava Kadima, has written to the Kenya Premier League dismissing the move.

Kadima termed the appointments as ‘unconstitutional’ while reiterating that the club’s executive committee was fully in charge, and no such interim appointments had been sanctioned.

“Kasavuli duly resigned as AFC Leopards chair, and therefore he is not allowed to sign or transact any business on behalf of the club,” Kadima said.

“The National Executive Committee will be meeting Thursday to deliberate on the next course of action and we shall notify you on who will be stepping in as the club’s interim chairman,” added Kadima.

Politician Amin Walji was appointed to head the 12-man interim caretaker committee which also includes former club chairman Alex Ole Magelo, club ambassador Charles Bukeko ‘Papa Shirandula’, club legend George Sunguti and Duncan Angote among others. 

“In the meantime, please note that the club has not sanctioned any caretaker committee because this goes against the constitution of the club,” Kadima’s statement said.

Kadima reiterated that the current executive members are capable of overseeing the running of the club until the next elections are held.

AFC Leopards have been in a financial mess since their sponsor Mumias Sugar withdrew their sponsorship after plunging into a financial crisis. 

With the ongoing Russian roulette at the club, there’s nothing indicating that the mess will be solved any time soon.

Ulinzi Conquer Mathare, Go Joint 2nd in KPL

Ulinzi Stars extended their unbeaten home run to six matches after two first half goals saw them conquer visiting Mathare United at Afraha, Wednesday evening.

The Soldiers, hunting for their maiden Kenya Premier League title in five years, were held to a 1-1 stalemate against lowly Nairobi City Stars in their last home game. The result was frowned upon.

Determined to correct the wrong of losing two points at home, the Kenya Defence Forces outfit were quick off the blocks against the Slum Boys. After pressing the visitors high up the field in the opening minutes, Ulinzi took a deserved lead with just 10 minutes on the clock. Skipper Stephen Ocholla leaped head and shoulders above the Mathare defence and powered in a header from a John Nairuka pinpoint cross beating Peter Odhiambo in Mathare’s goal.

It was the Ocholla’s second goal of the season having scored another header in the 3-1 win against local rivals Nakuru All Stars last month.

The visitors had not lost away to the four-time KPL winners in their previous 11 meetings, dating back to April 2 2011. However, their hopes of maintaining that run looked implausible just 5 minutes after the first goal, Kevin Amwayi finding the back of the net with a cracking volley at the quarter hour mark to double the hosts’ lead.

Mathare keeper Odhiambo was tested twice, first by reigning KPL Player of the Month John Makwatta then Oscar Wamalwa before the interval.

Mathare United boss Stanley Okumbi must have delivered a solid pep talk to his boys during the breather. The Slum Boys pulled a goal back just three minutes into the second half, their top hitman, Eric Johana finding the back of James Saruni’s net with a long range strike, his fourth goal of the campaign.

Job Muhati came close to restoring Ulinzi’s two-goal lead but was denied by a fingertip save from Odhiambo. On the other end, Saruni had to stretch at maximum to keep out Edwin Ombasa’s shot, a sacrifice that left the keeper injured and had to be replaced.

Despite losing their number one custodian and with 10 minutes added, Robert Matano’s side held on for the three points.

Their next assignment will be on Sunday against Sofapaka who they share the second spot on the log with. The duo drew both their matches 1-1 when they met last season but Sofapaka leads the Soldiers 4-2 in the head-to-head record.

Kenyan Sprinter Nkanata Revels at Competing alongside Usain Bolt

Julius Yego, was the only Kenyan winner at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet, the ‘You Tube Man’ obliterating his javelin national record and personal best with an 86.88m throw.

Kenya was represented by 18 athletes in both the male and women fields. David Rudisha failed to finish in the 600m after pulling up a muscle while Asbel Kiprop was beaten by Polish Marcin Lewandowski in the 1000m.

There was a special moment though for Carvin Nkanata, one of Kenya’s fast-rising short distance runners. The US-born Kenyan lined up next to six-time Olympic Gold medalist Usain Bolt in the 200m.

He pulled off a reaction time of 0.197, 0.046 seconds faster than the Jamaican’s 0.243. However, Bolt dashed to the finish line stopping the clock in his seasonal best 20.13 while Nkanata was 5^th in 20.97, 0.83 seconds outside his personal best.

Despite the low finish, the 24-year-old Africa Championships bronze medalist had much to celebrate.

“Today wasn’t my greatest race,” admitted Nkanata after the race. “But it was cool to compete against one of the best to ever do it (Usain Bolt),” he added.

Nkanata holds the Kenyan record over the 200m distance.

After a foul first throw, he threw 72.87m on the second before shattering his previous mark of 85.40m on his third throw, a distance which was good enough to see him win the gold ahead of German Rohler Thomas and Finn Tero Pitkamaki.

Strathmore Leos’ Brian Nyikuli to Captain Kenya 15s against Portugal

Strathmore Leos’ Brian Nyikuli will captain the Kenya 15s team in their test match against Portugal set for this Saturday at the RFUEA Grounds.

Head Coach Jerome Paarwater released the names of 15 players who will battle against the Europeans, the number having been trimmed down from the 51 who have been training at the Barclays Sports Club ahead of the clash.

Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions KCB Lions got the lion-share of slots in the team with six of its players making it to the final list. They include Darwin Mukidza, Fabian Olando, Jacob Ojee, Oliver Mang’eni, Moses Amusala and Curtis Ilako. Ojee and Mukidza will be making their full test debuts.

Top Fry Nakuru’s Sammy Warui, Kelvin Omiyo and Michael Okombe also made it to the final squad. Homeboyz's Emmanuel Mavala has also been handed his test debut and will be joined by teammate Joshua Chisanga. Kenya Harlequin's Isaac Adimo and Lyle Asiligwa also made the cut alongside Sammy Oliech of Impala Saracens.

The selected team will kick on with their training on Wednesday at the Barclays Sports Club. The final training session, commonly referred to as the ‘Captain’s Run’ in rugby jargon, will be held at 4.00pm on Friday at the RFUEA Grounds, just a day before the Portugal clash.

Kakamega Homeboyz Thrash Modern Coast, Go Top of FKF Premier League

Former Kenya Premier League side, Kakamega Homeboyz, stormed to the summit of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League after bossing hosts Modern Coast Rangers in Mombasa.

Homeboyz thumped Modern Coast 3-0 to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games as they leapfrogged Zoo Kericho to the top of the log.

Keiphas Baraza scored twice in the 23^rd and 42^nd minutes to give Kakamega a 2-0 lead at the interval. Dennis Mukaisi made it 3-0 to the visitors who left Mombasa Municipal Stadium with three goals and three points.

The win saw Kakamega dislodge Zoo Kericho from the top of the log. Kericho’s unbeaten home run came to a halt after they lost 1-2 to visiting Kariobangi Sharks at Kericho Green Stadium. A first half goal from former Gor Mahia man Ibrahim Kitawi and a second half strike from Erick Juma gave Sharks the win, Nicholas Kipkirui netting the hosts’ consolation goal.

With Posta Rangers winning 1-0 away at St. Joseph, Zoo find themselves on third spot. The top three are locked on the same 27 points after 13 match-days but Kakamega have a superior goal difference followed by Posta with Zoo third.

Sharks win sees them fourth on the log. In other matches, Nzoia United won 2-1 away to Nairobi Stima to keep themselves within touching distance of the top three. Bottom side FC Talanta continued their wanting run losing 2-0 at Bidco United while Nakumatt beat West Kenya Sugar 1-0 to go above them into 7^th.

Peter Chesoli netted a brace as Oserian edged Ligi Ndogo 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. John Mbogo scored the other goal while Ligi Ndogo goals were scored by Hassan Abdalla and Yator Kimechwa. Finlays Horticulture were held to a 1-1 draw by MOSCA FC.

Namibia, Botswana Shock Zambia and South Africa in COSAFA Cup

A new winner will be crowned when curtains come down in this year’s Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup.

This is after Zambia and South Africa, the only two remaining sides to have lifted the title, were stunned in the quarterfinals by Namibia and Botswana respectively.

Holders Zambia had been given bye to the quarters and were drawn to face Namibia who started their campaign in the group stages. Having topped Group A with two wins, one draw and no defeat, the Namibians still looked rusty against the Chipolopolo who had the edge in the entire match.

However, with no goals at the end of 90 minutes and no provision of extra time, the duo faced off in penalty shootouts. After all the first four takers converted, Emmanuel Mbola sent his shot over the bar, presenting Namibia’s Deon Hotto with a chance to send them to the semifinals, a call he duly answered.

The second semifinal pitting hosts South Africa and two-time second runners up Botswana assumed the same trajectory. After a goalless 90 minutes, the duo clashed in an intense marathon shootout which ended with the Zebras winning 7-6 to knockout the hosts.

Invitees Ghana are now favorites to land the title. The face Madagascar who in the third quarterfinal of the competition at the Moruleng Stadium before 2008 finalists Mozambique clash with two-time runners up Malawi.

Kenya 15’s Commence Training for Portugal Clash

Kenya 15’s Rugby team will begin their training this weekend as they prepare for their upcoming test match against Portugal set for May 30^th at the RFUEA Grounds.

The Kenya Simbas will train for four days beginning this Saturday May 23 at the Barclays Sports Club, Ruaraka. The first training session will be on Saturday between 6.30am and 10.30am.

On Monday, there will be a double training session, the first at RFUEA Grounds at 6.00am and the second at Barclays Sports Club at 6.00pm. The same schedule will be repeated on Wednesday at Barclays Sports Club, just a day after squad announcement which is scheduled for Tuesday at 10.00am.

The final training session, commonly referred to as the ‘Captain’s Run’ in rugby jargon, will be held at 4.00pm on Friday at the RFUEA Grounds, just a day before the Portugal clash.

A total of 51 players will participate in the first two training sessions before Kenya Head Coach Jerome Paarwater cuts the number down to size, 39, for the Portugal clash.

Muhoroni Slapped with a Heavy Fine, Fan Banned for Crowd Trouble

The Kenya Premier League Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee (IDCC) has made its biggest statement yet in its bid to contain crowd trouble in the league this season.

IDCC has landed heavy sanctions on Premier League club Muhoroni Youth who were unable to reign over their fans who disrupted their league match against visiting Western Stima on April 25.

Muhoroni have been fined Ksh 324,000 while a one-year ban has been slapped on one of its renowned fans, George Odhiambo Onyango alias ‘Jojo'.

"Muhoroni Youth F.C. failed to control its fans and/or supporters during the KPL Match No. 67 (2015), who as a result assaulted some officials of the Western Stima F.C. and damaged and appropriated their property," IDCC said in its ruling released on Thursday.

"We order Muhoroni Youth F.C. to pay damages to Western Stima F.C. for the damaged and/or lost property belonging to its officials in the sum of Kshs124,000 within fourteen (14) days from the date of this decision. It is further Ordered that Muhoroni Youth F.C. shall pay a fine of KShs200,000 within fourteen (14) days from the date of this decision,” said the statement.

“The Committee further orders a ban of Mr. George Odhiambo Onyango AKA Jojo from all KPL matches for a period of one (1) year effective from the date of this decision. Muhoroni Youth F.C. shall co-operate with KPL, and other clubs or security teams to ensure adherence to this order. In the event of any breach thereof, any affected person or persons is at liberty to refer to this committee for review and/or further orders."

Meanwhile the disciplinary body, under the directive of Chair Prof Migai Aketch, order for a review of security and safety of the Muhoroni venue to be undertaken by the KPL Security and Safety Committee, with the report to be submitted by June 22nd. 

Muhoroni won the match 1-0 and will count themselves lucky that IDCC didn’t reverse their win or at worse, dock them points.

Rama Salim Lined up for Gor Mahia Return

After recapturing pint-sized Danny Sserunkuma from Simba SC, two-time Kenya Premier League winners Gor Mahia are on course to bring back yet another prodigal son, Rama Salim.

The club’s Chairman, Ambrose Rachier, has confirmed that the 2011 KPL Young Player of the Year will return to the club before the second half of the season begins in June, the same period Sserunkuma’s homecoming is expected.

“Gor Mahia will sign both Rama Salim and Sserunkuma. The two will be part of the squad from beginning of June,” Rachier reportedly said.

The Congo JMJ United academy graduate left Kogalo in 2012 for a loan spell at Qatar second tier side Al-Marhikya SC, a move which failed to materialize after he was banned for gross misconduct.

He returned to Gor Mahia at the beginning of last season singing a six-month contract but left midway to join Tanzania outfit Coastal Union where he scored 7 goals as his side finished 5^th on the log.

Capped seven times with Harambee Stars, the diminutive winger-cum-forward however made it clear to his employers that he wished to move on.

His former boss Zdravko Logarusic, now at AFC Leopards and who together with Rama came close to winning the 2012 KPL title at Gor Mahia was reportedly keen to reconnect with the forward who instead preferred a move to the log leaders.

Sserukuma and Rama Salim were instrumental for Gor Mahia three seasons ago as they came close to winning two titles but lost out to Tusker. While the Ugandan stayed and won two consecutive KPL gongs, Rama moved on.

With Gor Mahia currently leading the standings with 9-points and looking relentless in their third title surge, Rama will fancy himself finally getting a KPL winners medal at the end of the season.

However, the big question is, where and how will he fit given how blessed the 14-time champions are in their attack.

Ali Abondo, Michael Olunga, Meddie Kagere, Dan Sserunkuma and Rama Salim, too dangerous on paper.

‘Big Vic’ Wanyama Wins Southampton's President Award

The stock of Kenyan international and Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama continues to rise after he grabbed yet another individual award at his club Southampton.

Wanyama was one of four big winners at the Saints’ Garmin Player Awards gala dinner on Wednesday night, the bossy midfield anchorman taking home the President’s Choice Award.

Southampton Honorary President Terry Paine was on hand to give Wanyama the award, the Saints legend saying the 23-year-old stood out from a group of generally impressive players.

“Wanyama stumped his own personality and identity in the team. His total commitment and aggression has been very much part of this team’s success,” he said.

“I pick Wanyama not because he comes from Africa or Kenya, but because he’s been outstanding. We have conceded only 31 goals this season, the same number as Champions Chelsea and that is mainly due to the shield he gives the back four,” added Terry.

Wanyama, who received a standing ovation from the gala night audience expressed his delight at receiving the award from a man held in such high regards at the club.

“Receiving this award from Terry is a big honour to me given his legendary status at the club. Am a big fan of his and it’s a big surprise to get recognition from him,” said Wanyama who has scored three goals in the Premier League for Southampton this season, his 40-yard scorcher in a 1-0 win against Hull City the highlight of the lot.

Jack Cork was the winner of the award last season.

Saints’ Captain Jose Fonte won the Fans’ Player and Players’ Player of the season awards. Matt Targett won the Young Player of the Season Award while Goal of the season award went to Shane Long for his strike in the 6-1 demolition of Aston Villa last weekend.

Winners of Masaku 7s to Pocket Ksh. 2 Million

In what started just three years ago, the Masaku International Sevens Rugby tournament has metamorphosed from being a just a sports event to a household, must-attend spectacle.

It has become one of the most attended and talked about events in the Kenya Rugby calendar, drawing participation from international teams and increasing attracting rugby fans from far and wide.

This year’s edition, the 4^th since inception, will be a 6-day event kicking off on June 30^th with schools and colleges rugby contest at the refurbished Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County, the ‘Place to Be’. The main tourney will be on Saturday July 4 with curtains coming down a day later.

Two-time winners, Kenya Harlequins, Kenya Cup champions KCB and 2014 Masaku 7s finalists Homebozy are expected to lead a strong line up of Kenyan teams.

Fiji’s Tabadamu won last year’s edition trouncing Uganda U-19 30-15 in the Main Cup Final. The Fijians are expected to send a different team called Uprising alongside other international sides from Norway, Scotland, Spain, France and Argentina. Oslo Rugby and Tabasuro Ladies will represent Norway, Spain will send Bera Bera team, France the French Barbarians, Argentina Puerreydon, Edinburgh from Scotland and Boyne from Ireland.

The organizers of the event which works under the auspices of Machakos County Government have increased the winning prize money fourfold from Ksh. 500,000 to Ksh. 2 million.

"A number of sponsors have come on board and from this, I can confidently say that the winner of this year will reap big for what they deserve if they win,” said Masaku 7s event Director and Kenyan Rugby legend Benjamin Ayimba.

Ghana's Andre Ayew Wins the Marc-Vivien Foe Ligue 1 Award

Ghana and Olympique Marseille midfielder Andre Ayew won the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foe award for the best African Player in the French Ligue 1 for 2014-15 season.

The 25-year-old beat off stiff competition from the likes of Nigeria Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama who won it last season, Ivory Coast’s Saint-Etienne forward Max-Alain Gradel and Tunisian Aymen Abdennour of Monaco.

Despite an injury-ravaged season, Ayew starred for Marseille as they pushed for their maiden Ligue 1 title since 2010. He scored 10 goals and added 2 assists in 27 games. The Ghanaian is expected to leave Marseille this summer and has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Liverpool.

The Marc-Vivien Foe Award was originally called Trophy for the Best African Ligue 1 Player before it was renamed in 2011 in honour of the Cameroonian who collapsed and died on the pitch on June 26 2003 during a FIFA Confederations Cup match against Colombia at the Stade de Gerland, Lyon.

Other players who have won the award include Morocco’s Marouane Chamakh, 2009, Ivorian Gervinho, 2010 and 2011, Moroccan Younes Belhanda, 2012, Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 2013, and Nigerian Enyeama who won it last season at Lille.

Kenya 7s Save Best for Last, Fiji Win Sevens Series

Kenya Sevens team ended their generally disappointing 2015 HSBC World Sevens Series campaign by putting in a strong show in the last leg in London to claim the bowl title.

Shujaa went to Twickenham at the back of having lost in the Bowl semifinals in their previous Glasgow Sevens leg and had been drawn to face hosts England, Scotland and minnows Brazil.

They endured a catastrophic first day in which they were shredded into pieces, first being whitewashed 40-0 by England before suffering a 26-12 loss to Scotland which crushed their hopes of making it into the main Cup quarters.

Felix Ochieng’s side saved some face as they labored to a 19-14 win over Brazil which ensured they finished 3^rd in the group and qualify for the Bowl quarters.

Kenya were faced Japan who they beat 24-12 on the second day,  a match which was highlighted by Collins Injera’s 200^th Rugby Sevens try. Samoa were the opposition for Shujaa in the semis. Injera touched down first but Samoa responded immediately with a converted try to give the Oceanians a 7-5 lead.

Dennis Ombachi and Billy Odhiambo stepped up and scored a brace each as Kenya triumphed 38-7. They met Argentina in the final, a team they brushed aside 26-12 to lift London Sevens Bowl title.

The win gave Shujaa 8 points but they were unable to move up the ranks as they finished 13^th on 46 points, just two places above relegated Japan.

Last season, Kenya finished 7^th with 84 points.

United States lifted the main cup title after going unbeaten and overpowering Australia 45-22 in the final.

However, the overall title went to Fiji whose 19-7 defeat of South Africa in the Main Cup quarters ensured they won the Series for only the second time in their history.

Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand and England grabbed the Rio 2015 Olympic spots while the rest, including Kenya, will have to go through the qualifiers.

‘Am Going for the Golden Boot’ Vows Gor Mahia’s Kagere after a Masterpiece Goal

Twice Kenya Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia produced one of the best second half performances of any team this season as they bossed their way past Nakuru All Stars in a five-star show that begot five goals.

Having failed to get the back of the net in their previous encounter against Western Stima (only the second time this season after a barren draw with Sofapaka), Gor Mahia looked like they would have another frustrating afternoon against lowly All Stars.

Profligacy from Kogalo’s attackers coupled by an impenetrable wall that was All Stars’ keeper Shayne Indimuli had kept the reigning champions at bay as the opening half seemed destined for a barren stalemate. That was until Meddie Kagere scored a poacher’s goal, the Ugandan-born Rwandese sneaking behind the All Stars’ defence to head in Abouba Sibomana’s cross and put Kogalo ahead at the stroke of half time.

Franck Nuttall’s side took the game by the scruff of its neck after the interval. Relentless, menacing, and with a workhorse-like diligence, they raided the basement club’s defence like a ravenous feline.

Michael Olunga looked hungry to add another goal to his impressive CV, Ali Abondo was unwavering in his pursuit to keep himself on top, Kagere looked possessed.

When the clock hit 68 minutes, it was still 1-0 to the record KPL winners. However, within the next 8 minutes, it was 4-0. First, Olunga headed past Indimuli, his 8^th goal of the season before Abondo made it three goals from Gor’s front three with a penalty after the former had been hauled down inside the box.

Kogalo’s three goals had been top quality, a mix of two well-taken headers, and a calmly slotted penalty.

Their fourth was something different, out of this world.

With the Nakuru-based side struggling to play the ball off their defence, Kagere sniffed at an opportunity. He made one step, two, pumped forward, pensively.  He increased his pace, making the defender to panic, forcing him to make an erroneous back pass.

Kagere rushed to it, got to it. What followed was gob smacking stuff. A move that belonged in the training field, but he executed in an actual game. Call it the Zidane Turn, Maradona turn, the Roulette, the 360, the double drag-back, it doesn’t matter.

On the evening, it belonged to Meddie Kagere. He dragged the ball with his left foot, spin his body, collected it with his right foot, left Indimuli with a spinning head and slotted the ball calmly into the back of the net.

Textbook stuff. Legendary. Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo will be proud to see that.

There was one more goal in the game, Harun Shakava heading in Kogalo’s fifth, his first goal of the season.

However, the day belonged to Kagere. Two well taken goals, the second, a magnum opus. “My second goal was an impossibility made possible,” he reckoned in his post-match interview. “I want to be the topscorer,” he declared.

On account of how he helped destroy Nakuru All Stars, you can do far worse than bet against him getting the golden boot.

COSAFA Cup Set for Kickoff this Weekend

The 15^th edition of the Council of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) cup opens its doors to players, team officials, media and fans this Sunday at the Moruleng Stadium in Northwest Province, South Africa.

A total of 14 teams, 12 member nations and two invitees, commence the battle for this year’s honours which will see the winner add R500,000 (Kshs 4m) to their coffers.

Higher ranked member states including defending champions Zambia, hosts South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Malawi have been given byes to the quarterfinals alongside guest nation Ghana.

Nambia, Mauritius, Seychelles and joint record-winners Zimbabwe have been drawn in Group A and will start their campaign this Sunday. Namibia will open the proceedings against Seychelles before Zimbabwe take on Mauritius at Moruleng.

Group B teams headed by Lesotho, Madagascar, Swaziland and invited Tanzania will begin their contests on Monday May 18. The top team in each pool will advance to the quarterfinals with Africa Cup on Nations losing finalists Ghana meeting winner of Group B while reigning champions Zambia will tackle Group A winners.

Mozambique versus Malawi and South Africa versus Botswana are the already decided quarterfinal clashes. The last six COSAFA Cup titles have been shared among Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe who have all won twice.

This year’s final will be played in Moruleng Stadium. Besides the R500k for the winners, R250,000 for runners up and R125,000 for the second runners-up, there will also be individual prizes for the Most Valuable Player, Golden Boot and tournament goalkeeper award whose winners will take home R20,000 (Kshs 160,000) each.
