The draw for the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League brought
up some interesting clashes with Arsenal finding themselves in the group of
death while Barcelona landed another group stage encounter against AC Milan for
the third time in a row.
The Gunners who advanced to the group stages after crushing
Fenerbahce in the play-offs have landed a tough group that includes last season’s
losing finalists Borussia Dortmund, Serie A giants Napoli and 9-times French
Ligue 1 champions Olympique Marseille.
Reigning champions Bayern Munich were pooled in Group D alongside
Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City, Russian side CSKA Moscow, and Czech
Republic outfit Viktoria Plzen while Manchester United got arguably a safe landing
after being drawn against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, Bundesliga’s Bayer
Leverkusen and La Liga side Real Sociedad in Group A.
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea are in Group E where they will
face Schalke and two teams they conquered on their way to winning last season’s
Europa League, FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest. Scottish champions Celtic find
themselves in a tough group that also has Barcelona, Ajax and AC Milan while an
open Group G has Porto, Atletico Madrid, Zenit St Petersburg and Austria Viena.
Last season’s losing semi-finalists and 9-time champion
Real Madrid have been pooled against Serie A topdogs Juventus, Turkey’s Galatasaray
and Danish side FC Copenhagen while Group C has spendthrifts Paris Saint
Germain, Olympiakos and Anderlecht.
