COPA Under-15 Players Arrive for Nationals, Draw Set for Sunday

After a 4-month long regional competition that saw giants fall, minnows rise up to the occasion and new stars come of out of the shadows, the COPA Coca-Cola Under-15 youth football spectacle enters the crucial stage; the national finals.

A total of 16 teams from all over the country are expected to arrive at the Kenya High School beginning tomorrow (Saturday) at noon where they will pitch camp as they gear themselves for a week-long national championships slated to begin on Monday at the Hope Center in Kawangware.

“We have had successful activations at regional levels where we witnessed topnotch competition from both the boys’ and girls’ teams,” noted Gerald Chege, the co-coordinator of the tournament. “Here we are now, ready to take this tournament to the next level as we provide these young players a national platform to showcase their undoubted talents,” he added.

Among the teams expected at the national championships include JMJ Academy, Otto Benecker and UEFA Babes from host county Nairobi, Black Cats and Mukuyuni Red Shooters from Eastern, Kisumu Lakers and Kisumu Queens from Nyanza and Ruiru Neptunes and Maragwa Queens from Central. Others are Murhanda Boys and Girls from Western, Gunners FC and Kapsowar Girls from Rift Valley and Malindi United Academy and Kaloleni Queens from Coast.

Meanwhile the draw for the finals will be conducted at the Kenya High School on Sunday morning, just a day before the preliminary matches begin on Monday at Hope Center. The fixtures will be picked at random and see teams compete in group stages with top teams advancing to the quarters, semis and finals respectively. The finals will be played at City Stadium on Saturday 24th from 9.am.
