Ali Abondo scored his 7th goal of the season, 11
in all competitions, as reigning champions Gor Mahia continued their march towards
an unprecedented third consecutive Kenya Premier League title by beating Sony Sugar
1-0.
Abondo, who started his professional career with Sony Sugar and
was re-signed by Kogalo from Tusker, found the back of the net in the 57th
minute with the hosts failing to find the equalizer.
The match was played under soggy conditions, the heavens
having opened up before kickoff. The slippery pitch didn’t make it easier for
the hosts nor the visiting Gor Mahia side to play flowing football as the half
ended on a drab 0-0 stalemate.
Frank Nuttall’s side put their foot on the gas pedal after
the interval and were rewarded just after the hour mark courtesy of Abondo. It
was the fifth time the midfielder had opened the scoring for the record champions
who extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches and are yet to concede first in
over 900 minutes of football.
The win saw Kogalo extend their lead at the top to seven
points having now played the same number of matches as second-placed Thika
United.
For Sony, it rounded up some few days to forget having
suffered their heaviest defeat in KPL last Friday at the hands of AFC Leopards
who mauled them 5-1.
Gor Mahia’s next assignment will be an away clash against 4th-placed Western Stima, a team they have beaten 2-0 in their last three meetings. Zedekiah Otieno’s Sugar Millers will host third-from bottom KCB.
