Not Yet El Classico as Barca and Madrid Avoid Each Other in Champions League Semis Draw

The 2013 UEFA Champions League final could witness the first El Classico match at that level after Barcelona and Real Madrid were put apart in the semi-final draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

Barcelona will clash with last year’s finalists Bayern Munich while Real Madrid face a tricky tie against Borussia Dortmund who are yet to taste defeat in this season’s competition.

The first leg matches will be played in Germany on the 23rd and 24th of April while Spain will stage the return leg matches a week later on 30 April and May 1.

The draw pitted German Bundesliga champions Bayern against Spain La-Liga champions-elect Barcelona while the Real Madrid-Dortmund match up will be a clash for second placed teams in the respective leagues.

The last time Dortmund and Los Blancos clashed at the semi-finals stage was 15 years ago when the latter prevailed with a 2-0 home win in the first leg and a barren draw in the return match. However, the two clubs met in the group stages this season and drew 2-2 in the first leg but Die Schwarzgelben nicked a 2-1 win in the second leg, a result that was vital as they ended up topping the group ahead of the 9-time champions.

Jose Mourinho's men have the edge on the head-to-head encounter having won 2 drawn 3 and lost only one against Jurgen Klopp's side.

Bayern and Barcelona have met six times in the competition and the Bavarians have the better head-to-head record having won 3 compared to Barca's 1 win. Two games have been drawn between them.

Meanwhile in the Europa League, Chelsea, England's only remaining team in European club football competition after Tottenham and Newcastle were dumped out, have been drawn against FC Basel. The Swiss side who conquered Tottenham in the quarter finals and also scalped Manchester United in the group stages will host the first leg before traveling to London for the return leg.

The other quarterfinal tie will be Fenerbahce host Benfica for the first leg tie before making the trip to Portugal a week later. The first legs will be played on April 25 with the return matches slated for May 2. The Amsterdam Arena in Holland will host the finals.

And That's thesteifmastertake!!
