FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Arrives in Africa

The FIFA World Cup™ Trophy has landed in Africa as the countdown on its Kenyan leg begins. The iconic silverware arrived at the Cairo International Airport in Egypt on Thursday afternoon amid fanfare and excitement across the North African nation.

The trophy was received by a host of celebrities and government officials who had the pleasure of getting up close with the 6.17 kilogram, 18-carat gold icon for only the second time. The trophy visits the land of pyramids barely four days before Egypt’s crunch World Cup qualifier match against Ghana at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo. The West Africans stand between the Pharaohs and their first World Cup since 1990 as they hold a 6-1 cushion against their North African counterparts heading into the second leg decider.

Celebrations to welcome the trophy started at the airport and was attended by some of the nation’s football greats including the legendary Hazem Emam, formerly of Zamalek SC, 4-time Africa Nations Cup winner Ahmed Hassan (the most capped international male footballer in history), and national team defensive midfielder Mohammed Shawky.

The trophy is on a 267-day globetrotting tour across 88 countries. It will spend two days in Egypt before traveling to Algeria, Morocco and Ghana on the 17th, 21st and 23rd respectively. The solid gold trophy is expected in Kenya on the 27th of November and will be on public display on the 28th at the Kenyatta International Conference Center. Tickets to attend the public viewing session are being won through Coca-Cola promotions countrywide.
