After just six months into his contract with Tanzanian
Premier League side Simba FC, former Nairobi City Stars and Gor Mahia marksman
Daniel ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuma has ended his association with the Dar es Salaam-based
club.
Sserunkuma who signed a one-year contract with Simba in
December last year, confirmed on his official twitter account that him and
Simba have mutually agreed to terminate the contract barely half way into it.
It brings to a sudden halt a fruitless and perhaps backward
step for Sserunkuma who departed Gor Mahia at the end of last year having
collected two Kenya Premier League winners’ medals.
‘Mzee’ mostly cut a forlorn and frustrated figure at Simba
bench where he was overlooked and limited to only 17 appearances; mostly from
the bench where he provided a meager 5-goal return in all competitions.
While he did not reveal the sudden halt of his playing
career at the 18-time Tanzania Premier League champions, Sserunkuma’s agent Ken
Joseph hinted at the obvious lack of playing opportunities at the club.
Before his departure to Simba, Sserukuma had established
himself as a vital cog for Gor Mahia and one of KPL’s best players. Having
joined Kogalo in 2012, the pint-sized forward scored 40 goals in three seasons
in the KPL. He was the league’s top-scorer last season with 16 goals (40% of
all goals Gor Mahia scored in the league) as he led them to back-to-back league
titles.
With such a scoring CV, it’s only obvious that a host of
Kenyan clubs will be breathing down the neck of his agent to try thrash out a
deal to bring him back to a league where he made his name.
Top of the list is top of the table Gor Mahia. The exodus of
Sserunkuma looked like it could hurt Kogalo’s chances of winning the league for
an unprecedented third consecutive time. However, with 11 games into the new
season, Franck Nuttall’s side are the league’s top scoring team with 21 goals,
just one shy of an average of two goals per match. Their three-pronged attack
of Michael Olunga, Meddie Kagere and Ali ‘Teargas’ Abondo has seen them score
in all but two of their KPL games this season – versus Sofapaka and Western
Stima.
With such a devastating attack and with the likes of
Innocent Wafula and George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo pushing for attacking
positions, Sserunkuma may be deemed surplus to requirements. However, for the
sake of squad depth and adding a different type of player within their ranks,
Kogalo may decide to bring back their prodigal son.
AFC Leopards, a team that Sserunkuma ensured he scored
against whenever he faced them, are another of his likely destinations. In what
would prove to be a controversial move (shifting one Shemeji to another), Ingwe, could do worse than recruit a
player who hurt their defence time and again. They are the only club who could
go head to head with archrivals Gor Mahia and stand a chance of getting Sserunkuma’s
signature.
Lastly, there are the likes of Sofapaka and Tusker who are
some of the league’s behemoths and could afford to pay the Ugandan his wage
demands. The dark horse will be 2008 KPL winners Mathare United whose coffers
were recently bankrolled by insurance firm Britam which has seen them set sight
on the title.
Should he make a return to the Kenya Premier League and whichever
club he ends up signing for, the Lubega-born marksman will be a fine addition
to the squad, provided he is given opportunities to prove himself, the one
thing he lacked at Simba.
