Hosts, Kenya, will have to navigate through Group ‘A’ that
includes Ethiopia, Zanzibar and South Sudan in their quest to win the 2013
CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup that begins on November 27.
The Harambee Stars will play Ethiopia in the opener at Nyayo
National Stadium as they try to go one better than the losers’ medal they took
home last year after losing the final to bitter rivals Uganda.
The Uganda Cranes, who have won the trophy for the past two
consecutive years and a record 13 times, have been drawn in Group ‘C’ alongside
Rwanda, Sudan and Eritrea.
Three-time winners Tanzania are in Group ‘B’ where they will
face Somalia, Burundi and guest team Chipolopolo of Zambia. This will only be
the 6th time Kenya will be hosting what is the oldest football tournament
in Africa after it rebranded to CECAFA Cup from Challenge Cup.
The tournament which will run between November 27 and December
12 will be hosted in 4 venues, Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium and Moi Stadium
Kasarani, Machakos Stadium, Kisumu Stadium and in Mombasa.
The draw for the tournament was conducted Friday in the
presence of Sports Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario, Cecafa Secretary General
Nicholas Musonye, Football Kenya Federation Chairman Sam Nyamweya and
SuperSport head of Africa Andre Venter among others.
