right from the preliminary level, through to the quarters, semis and finals,”
said SuperSport East Africa General Manager Auka Gecheo during the
announcement.
GOtv is among a host of sponsors who have given CECAFA Cup a
shot in the arm on its return to the Kenyan soil since 2009. Others who have
committed themselves include world beverage giant Coca-Cola who have allocated
Kshs. 6.5million for the tournament with Kshs 1.5million going into products
Governors from host
counties Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Machakos have also pledged their
sponsorship packages for the East and Central Africa football spectacle. Both
Nairobi and Kisumu counties have pledged Ksh. 10million each while Machakos will
inject Kshs. 5million into the tournament. Insurance company, UAP, will insure
all the tournament players to the tune of Kshs. 5.5million.
“We’ve continued to grow football in this country in leaps
and bounds. We increased the number of KPL matches aired live in the season
that has just ended and we all see how successful the GOtv Cup was,” noted GOTv
Kenya General Manager Felix Kyengo.
“This will be one of the most organized CECAFA tournaments
this region has ever seen. We are extremely grateful for all the sponsors led
by GOTv and Coca-Cola for their commitment in supporting the growth of football
in this country,” said FKF President Sam Nyamweya.
Meanwhile CECAFA Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye, has issued
a rallying call for Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and get behind
Harambee Stars. “The success of this tournament will depend on how far the
Harambee Stars will go. I am a Kenyan and will be behind my national team so I urge
other Kenyans to do so from the onset. I hope we perform really well and win
this tournament as a gift for Kenyans during this 50th year
anniversary,” said Musonye.
The tournament, the oldest of its kind in Africa, will run
from the 27th of November to December 12th. Nairobi and
Machakos will host the pool games with Mombasa and Kisumu hosting the quarters
and semis consecutively. The finals will be held in Nairobi.
The tickets for this year’s tournament will be sold at Kshs.
